The Science Research Building is a new institute at UTSC that defines an approach to science that is inter- and multi-disciplinary, bringing together in research clusters, toxicologists, micro biologists, environmental chemists, plant cell biologists and developmental psychologists, and creating a dynamic synergy that reinforces the university's cutting edge thinking on interdisciplinary education. Graduate student work areas are integrated within state-of-the-art, adaptable laboratories filled with natural light. The building houses 16 laboratories designed as generic and flexible wet labs, associated support areas, 16 faculty offices, 16 research assistant and post doctoral fellow offices, 48 graduate student work spaces, lounges, 3 meeting rooms and one lecture theatre for 250 students. The building responds to the importance of the ravine site, campus context, and the existing architecturally significant science wing. The new building extends the original iconic John Andrews Science Wing, respecting the UTSC master plan, emulating existing built patterns, and linking old and new through interior pedestrian streets. Exterior cladding materials such as Indiana Limestone, wood and glass continue as interior surfaces connecting the outside to inside. |
