Palestinian Museum

+ International Competition Finalist, 2011

Just as tatreez begins with a single stitch, the Palestinian Museum begins with a single story. It is in this way that the cross-stitch, the distinctive building block of traditional Palestinian embroidery, becomes symbolically synonymous with the narrative that is envisioned as the foundation of the new Palestinian Museum.

One thread sewn into a single cross-stitch has singular beauty examined in the close. But it is the coming together of the multitude of stitches that, viewed from afar, creates and reveals the power, strength and beauty of the final fabric. United on that canvas, the collection of connected stitches creates in tatreez a bold, dynamic and utterly unique fabric emblematic of the Palestinian social, geographical, cultural and communal landscape and heritage.

The story told by one person has, like the cross stitch, singular uniqueness and import, but it will be in the telling of the many stories of the Palestinian people - through the vehicle of the narrative and the platform of the new Palestinian Museum - that a deeper global understanding of what it is that unites and defines the Palestinian nation is truly revealed and understood.
