Building and Passage
The Design for the New Brunswick Provincial Museum is the result of a process of discovery and choreography of the visitor experience. The project was born from the institution's tremendous collection, its stewards, the dramatic site and potential for discovery. The proposed journey from the past, through actual encounter with the present, hopes to foster dreams of the future.
The Rock
NBM is sited on a wholly remarkable fragment of dynamic, living Earth called the Miramichi Bras D'Or Terrane. This fragment of Precambrian crust is the ancient core of New Brunswick. Geological stories in the form of fossilized patterns run directly below the site.
The Rivers
The human inhabitation of the rivers reveals the stories of New Brunswick's people. Ships took New Brunswicker's to the world and ships brought the world back to New Brunswick. The site of the Museum contains many vestiges of their cultural heritage: natural phenomenon of Reversing Falls, archaeological digs, 1800's Captain's houses and the powerful pulp and paper industry.
The Stories
The great lore and industry of shipbuilding became a compelling source of inspiration for the design of the museum as ONE NBM became a vessel for their stories. Visitors pass through the original 1934 Building into the Great Hall with views to the Saint John River. Along two parallel circulation spines, the exposed Geology Passage and the River Passage, the visitor encounters the galleries dedicated to Industry, Shipbuilding, Marine Life, Botany, Geology, Aboriginal Artifacts, Decorative Arts and Fine Arts. Captured views, from the Industry Gallery to the Pulp and Paper Mill and from the Aboriginal Gallery to the active archaeological site, connect the project to the place.
