Discovery and self-directed learning were the key elements in the design for the Toronto Reference Library. Essential to both is the ready availability of resources to a large number of people. The selection of a site on Yonge Street at the intersection of the city's two main subway lines was a first step in ensuring accessibility. As important as physical access, however, is an inviting, easily understood environment. With its many departments visible at a glance from the light-filled five-storey atrium, the Toronto Reference Library encourages users to browse through its collections, barrier-free yet secure. For over 20 years, the Toronto Reference Library has continued to serve a broad-based multi-cultural community, offering materials in 122 different languages, including 54 native North American languages, to business people, serious researchers, and high school students, all working side by side.
